Arnold, Matthew. Poetical Works of Matthew Arnold. London: Macmillan and Co., 1901. A presentation card from Rev. R. Percy Thompson loosely inserted. Silk page marker. Bound in olive green morocco for Bumpus (almost certainly by Riviere & Son) with a beautifully designed front cover featuring gouged vines converging at the top and bottom of the cover, with the title in the middle, terminating in an array of leaves and art nouveau gilt-stamped flowers. A subtle pattern of gilt dots accents the cover throughout. Five bands to spine, with title in the second compartment, and tightly-spaced leaves & flowers in the remaining compartments. Gilt ruled turn-ins. All edges gilt. Measures approx. 5" x 7.5". Spine faded to brown, along with upper margin of rear cover lightly faded.
