[Fine Binding | Cuneo] Aphrodite

Louÿs, Pierre. Aphrodite. Privately Printed for Subscribers, 1913. Limited to 500 copies, of which this is #442. Bound in 3/4 blue morocco by Cuneo with marbled boards, gilt-rolled corners, and 4 bands to spine. Title and author to second and third compartment, circular gilt design to first compartment, and large fourth compartment featuring a design of inlaid red heard, gold diamonds, and floral gilt tooling. Blue marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Measures 6.25" x 8.5". Some minor wear to edges and corners, along with spine & leather near spine very slightly faded.

Likely tooled by Leonard Mounteney, who was the finisher at Cuneo at the time this volume was bound (late 1920s/early 1930s). Mounteney worked as an extra finisher at Riviere & Son in London until 1924, when he joined the Extra Bindery at R. R. Donnelley in Chicago, working alongside Alfred de Sauty. He left Donnelley in 1926 to join Cuneo's hand bindery, also in Chicago.
