[Fine Binding | Guild of Women Binders] Ellen Terry and Her Impersonations

Hiatt, Charles. Ellen Terry and Her Impersonations: An Appreciation. London: George Bell and Son, 1898. Frontispiece with original tissue guard (foxed), 31 plates of photographs of Terry's principal roles (including plate opp. page 24 not in list of illustrations); making a total of 32 plates. Loosely inserted in the original box is an invitation to a Farewell Dinner held at the Hotel Astor in Honor of Miss Ellen Terry on February 23, 1911.

Bound in full modeled calf by the Guild of Women Binders, with an embossed portrait of Terry as the central decoration (and her name on either side), along with embossed images of her portrayals of (clockwise) Portia from "The Merchant of Venice", Imogen from "Cymbeline", Iolanthe from the play of the same name, and Rosamond in "Becket". Surrounding the portraits are modeled leaves and vines. The smooth spine features a large incised "Ellen Terry" in an olde English script, and the back cover is a diapered pattern of leaves and intertwining branches. All edges gilt with gauffered pattern to all edges. Green and purple mottled endpapers. Housed in very worn original felt-lined slipcase, with cover detached and title in gilt to the spine. Owner inscription on flyleaf of Beatrice Gunsaulus, and noted as given to her by her father, Frank Gunsaulus, a known patron of the Guild of Women Binders. Measures approx. 5.25" x 7.5". Rubbing to edges, corners, and spine, with some spotting and scratches to cover and spine. Corners bumped. Inscription on image opposite page 240 "In Remembrance of Ellen Terry" and dated 1915.
