[Fine Binding | Pheasantry Bindery | Reigate Press] Order of Public Worship

Order of Public Worship and Prayers for Various Occasions: From the Revised Westminster Directory of Public Worship and the Book of Common Prayer: St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Redhill and Reigate. Surrey: Printed at the Reigate Press by John Madden, 1899.  Printed in black and red on Hammer & Anvil paper. Beautiful borders and initials in the Arts & Crafts style designed and engraved on wood by Elaine Lessore and Bernard Adeney. St. Paul's Presbyterian Church was formed in 1900, and is now known as Saint Paul's United Reformed Church of Redhill and Reigate.

Bound at the Pheasantry Bindery by R., A., & D. McGregor Aird from a design by Millicent F. Woodhams. Full dark navy morocco with a large inlaid teal green cross and ring to the front cover, with three small rings inside the larger one, each with gilt Latin lettering. Gilt border with small Celtic knots at each corner. Intertwined gilt tooling extending from bands of spine to front and rear covers. Title to second spine compartment, remaining compartments gilt-ruled. Gilt-ruled turn-ins with Celtic knot tooling to corners. Light blue endpapers, all edges gilt. Bookplate of George Currie Martin to an endpaper. Measures approx. 6.25" x 9.5". Joints and upper & lower 1" of spine repaired with Japanese tissue. Some rubbing and wear to spine, along with minor rubbing to board edges and wear to corners. Offsetting to endpapers.  

A copy of this title, bound by the Pheasantry Bindery, was exhibited at the ninth exhibition of Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society in 1909. While it's impossible to say if it was this specific copy, based on the craftsmanship, it is certainly worthy of exhibition.
