[Fine Binding | Douglas Cockerell] Of The Imitation of Christ

À Kempis, Thomas. [Of the Imitation of Christ]. London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1897. Printed on Van Gelder handmade paper. Bound in full niger morocco by Douglas Cockerell in 1900 in his signature Arts & Crafts style, with the covers divided into nine panels by gilt rules, and four gilt curvilinear geometric ornaments in each corner, accented with a small inlaid green roundel in the center. Gilt borders around edges. Five bands to spine with author to second compartment, and remaining compartments featuring the same gilt ornament as the covers (green roundels faded to brown). Gilt-ruled turn-ins with grey endpapers and flyleaves. All edges gilt. Measures approx. 7" x 8.75". Spotting & some staining to covers, along with darkening to outer edges and spine. Some rubbing to edges, corners worn and bumped.
