[Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue | Illuminated] Sonnets from the Portuguese

Browning, Elizabeth Barrett. Sonnets from the Portuguese. Boston: Published by Copeland & Day, printed by Harvard University Press, 1896. With decorations & initials by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. A beautifully illuminated copy by Ruth Adams Turner (so signed on the colophon) in watercolors, with some elements heightened in gold. Turner was an artist that worked in the Boston area and is known to have illuminated other books by Copeland & Day (see below). Bound in full dark blue morocco with title and author in gilt to the front cover, along with a simple gilt rule. Smooth spine has been rebacked. Rolled gilt turn-ins, with blue, green, and gold endpapers. In addition to rebacked spine, some rubbing to edges and bumping to corners.

The present copy was likely lot #311 from the library of Preston A. Perry, sold in 1908 by Anderson Galleries. In addition, The Library of Charles W. Clark notes a copy of Shakespeare's Sonnets also illuminated by Turner.
