Moulton, Louise Chandler. In the Garden of Dreams: Lyrics and Sonnets. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1890. Inscribed to Louise Manning Hodgkins (dated "Christmas, 1889") by Moulton, with Hodgkins' bookplate on the front pastedown. Illustrated with small text illustrations in black & white. Binding design by Sarah Wyman Whitman, with half pale green and half ivory cloth with full gilt thistle plant and lettering on ivory portion. Some light green, pink, and blue watercolor has been added to the thistle plant and lettering. Top edge gilt.  Measures approx. 5.25" x 7.25". Some foxing and browning to ivory cloth portion, light rubbing to edges and spine tips.

Louise Manning Hodgkins, born in 1846 in Massachusetts, was a prominent American educator, author, and editor. After teaching at Lawrence College and Wellesley College, she focused on writing and editing, producing notable works like Nineteenth Century Authors of Great Britain and the United States and Via Christi. Hodgkins also served as editor for "The Heathen Woman's Friend," impacting missionary literature significantly. She pursued further studies in Europe and resided in Auburndale, Massachusetts. She passed away in 1935, leaving behind a legacy of scholarly and literary contributions (Wikipedia).
