Marcus Aurelius. London: Arthur Humphreys, 1906. Per a note loosely inserted, this volume was specially bound as a wedding gift for one Elizabeth from her friend Harriet, with the bride's initials stamped in front ("E.M.C."). Bound in full crushed morocco by Fanny Dudley with a triple gilt-ruled border and and a small square floral ornament at the center of the top, bottom, and sides. Five raised bands with the title to the second compartment and small circular gilt dot ornament to remaining compartments. Similarly decorated turn-ins, with handmade paper endpapers. Measures approx. 5" x 6.5". Some rubbing to edges, corners, and spine bands, with small spots of scuffing to edge of rear board. Spotting to rear board, offsetting to endpapers.
Dudley was a pupil of Florence Foote (herself a pupil of Evelyn Nordhoff and T.J. Cobden-Sanderson), member of the National Society of Craftsmen and Guild of Bookworkers, and exhibited alongside many of the prominent American bookbinders of the period.
