Inscription to Mary Clugston from John & Mary Fazakerley, dated "Liverpool, 1893". Bound in full brown crushed morocco by Fazakerley with gilt stippled tooling to corners of boards and five of six spine compartments. Wide, ruled and decorated turn-ins with floral gilt endpapers. All edges gilt, with a striking fore-edge painting of Nottingham Castle with the artist’s monogram of Winifred Arthur in the lower right corner. Slight rubbing to boards, edges of a few pages turned over (can be seen in monogram closeup image).

"...Miss Winifred Arthur, whose father, J.S. Arthur, was a director of Howell's booksellers in Liverpool. She undertook the work of fore-edge painting on a commission basis, and her signature is a monogram of her initials, W.A. She lived at Lidderdale Road, Southdown Road, Liverpool, and died in the 1930s" (Tidcombe).
