[Fine Binding] The XII Books of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

Long, George (translated by). The XII Books of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus the Emperor[by Charles Whittingham and Co. at the Chiswick Press for] George Bell and Sons, 1898. Bound in full green crushed morocco with gilt art nouveau border to upper board, done with gouges and large stylized leaf tools. Similar design to the six compartments at spine, with gilt title to 2nd compartment. Gilt ruled turn-ins and marbled olive and purple endpapers. Top edge gilt, others uncut. The binding is very similar to the work Riviere & Son was producing at this time. Bookplate of Maud Ernestine Gladstone (daughter-in-law to William Gladstone). Measures approx. 6.25" x 9.75". Some light rubbing to edges, spine slightly faded and gilt somewhat dulled, offsetting to endpapers.
