[Sangorski & Sutcliffe] Idylls of the King

Tennyson, Alfred. Idylls of the King. London: Edward Moxon & Co, 1859. First edition, first issue with title page verso blank. The author's cycle of twelve narrative poems retelling the legend of King Arthur. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in navy blue crushed morocco, with three gilt rules on the front cover framing a rectangular panel made up of a large inlaid grey sword with gilt handle, the initials "A T" just below the hilt, surrounded by leaves, branches, and stippling in gilt. A visually stunning design. Six compartments to spine, with title and author to two, and similar leaves, branches, and stippled design to remaining four. Three gilt rules to rear cover. Gilt ruled and decorated turn-ins. Endpapers in gold, maroon, and a variety of shades of blue. All edges gilt. House in felt-lined cloth clamshell with gilt lettering to spine. Measures approx. 4.5" x 6.75". A pristine copy. Some light wear to clamshell.
