[Illuminated Manuscript] On Gardens

Bacon, Francis. On Gardens. [Approx. 1916]. A flyleaf notes the following: "This book was made by Phyllis [indecipherable] Clay (later Kennedy) whilst an art student 1916 approx for John Tremlett". An accomplished illuminated manuscript on 20 leaves of handmade paper, done in watercolor and ink, with a decorative title page, seven (mostly floral) decorative ornaments within the text, a tipped-in full page illustration of cowslips, and a variety of minor decorative flourishes throughout. Presumably bound by the artist, the volume is bound in two pieces of suede, overlapping & connected at the rear hinge, with a worked floral ornament to the front cover. Measures approx. 8" x 9.25". Spine is chipped and worn, with rubbing to edges and some spotting to covers.
