The Second Version of the Translations by Edward Fitzgerald from Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Wausau, Wisconsin: Printed by Van Vechten & Ellis for The Philosopher Press, 1901). Limited to 100 copies, of which this is #91. [14] French-fold leaves. Title page with watercolor inscription: “Iluminated [sic] by / Charles M. Plein / Omaha Neb. / Oct 1915”; two glossy leaves with examples of the border decoration laid in. Each text page with an elaborate decorative border beautifully colored by hand, along with an original watercolor illustration by Plein tipped-in before the title page on a thick, glossy cardstock. The illustration is heightened with gold illumination, featuring a man dressed in a turban and holding a scimitar above his head, enveloped in a mix of billowing cloth and smoke emanating from a decorative vase below. The scene is framed with a border of grapes and vines on a burnished gilt ground, with a chalice poised prominently at the top of the image.

Bound in 3/4 maroon morocco over pink mottled paper boards. Five bands to spine, second and third compartments with gilt lettering, remaining compartments with gilt ornament made up of small fleuron tools. Mottled endpapers. Housed in a maroon cloth slipcase (slightly worn and faded). Measures approx. 10" x 12.5". Some small spots of rubbing to spine, some minor spots to paper on front board. Final French-fold leaf cleanly torn along part of the fold at the top (not affecting contents on either side), verso of free endpaper in front and back with just a hint of darkening at edges (apparently from binder’s glue).

Charles M. Plein (1870–1920) was a German-American artist active in Nebraska, known for his work as a photography colorist, illustrator, and retoucher. He gained recognition for his bronze sculptures, notably The Vanishing Race.

The Philosopher Press was founded in 1897 by Philip and Helen Van Vechten, along with partner William Ellis. Initially managing the business's finances, Helen (1868-1949) quickly developed a passion for the craft of book-making and became an expert in hand-printing techniques. Under her leadership, and as one of the few women involved in fine book-making during the time, the Philosopher Press produced finely crafted limited editions, reflecting the Arts & Crafts movement's emphasis on quality and design.
