[Roycrofters | Illuminated] The Book of Job

The Book of Job. As Translated from the Original by Rabbi Abraham Elzas; with some Comments on the Poem by Elbert Hubbard. East Aurora, NY: Roycroft Shop, 1897. Limited to 350 copies, of which this is #136. Signed in Hubbard's name. Initials illuminated by hand in watercolors and gold, along with several small vignettes in watercolor throughout. Bound in the publisher's binding of white cloth spine and blue paper covered boards with gilt title to spine and front board. The cover of this book has been hand illuminated with holly leaves, a crest, and the initials "JAP" (possibly by one of the Roycroft artists, but difficult to say for certain). Christmas inscription dated 1897 to front endpaper in gold pen with a small "Christmas Greetings" card from Andrew H. Krug loosely inserted. Measures approx. 5.5" x 8.25". Browning and soiling to paper-covered boards, along with some light soiling to spine. Wear to corners and rubbing to edges of boards. A few spots of foxing and browning to endpapers and edges of textblock.
